Unwanted Fire Alarm Signals

Preventing Unwanted Fire Alarm Signals (UFAS)

Across the UK, unwanted fire signals continue to cause significant disruption to emergency services. These incidents can divert vital resources away from genuine emergencies and increase risk within our communities.

Key Measures to Reduce UFAS in Schools

Pre-Construction Planning

  • Engage early with contractors to discuss fire alarm system sensitivities and known triggers

  • Review your Fire Risk Assessment to reflect the nature and location of planned works

  • Identify areas where detectors may require temporary adjustment, isolation, or protection

Temporary Isolation and System Management

  • Ensure any isolation of fire detection systems is carried out in a controlled manner and in line with your procedures

  • Only competent persons should make changes to fire alarm system configurations

  • Agree clear start and end times for isolation periods and maintain a record

  • Reinstate detection zones as soon as it is safe and practical

Communication and Control

  • Ensure all contractors understand site fire safety procedures and how to prevent false alarms

  • Appoint a responsible person each day to oversee contractor activity and compliance

  • Display clear signage in work areas, including:

    • No smoking requirements

    • Hot work permit controls

    • Awareness of nearby fire detectors

Hot Works and Dust-Producing Activities

  • Use a hot work permit system where applicable

  • Protect, shield, or (where appropriate) temporarily remove nearby detectors—by competent persons only

  • Regularly check that detector covers or protective measures remain in place

After-Hours or Out-of-Term Working

  • Ensure fire alarm systems remain monitored when sites are unoccupied

  • Keep emergency contact details up to date with monitoring centres

  • Ensure a responsible person can attend site if required

  • Reinstate all fire protection measures at the end of each working day
