Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service

CommunityEducation.

Education and engagement

At Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service, we believe that prevention through education is key to building safer communities. Our dedicated teams deliver a wide range of educational programmes tailored to schools, families, and community groups across the county.

Schools education programme

Our Schools Education Programme provides engaging, age-appropriate fire safety education to children and young people from Early Years through to Key Stage 5.

These sessions cover essential topics such as:

  • Fire safety in the home

  • Deliberate Fire Setting and Anti-social behaviour

  • The dangers of hoax calls

  • Road, Water and Ice safety

  • Understanding the role of the fire service

We work closely with schools to align our content with the national curriculum and ensure that students leave with practical knowledge that can help protect themselves and others.

Community education

Our Community Education initiatives extend beyond the classroom to reach residents of all ages and backgrounds. These include:

  • Home Fire Safety Checks (HFSC): Free visits to assess fire risks in the home, offer safety advice, and install smoke alarms where needed.

  • Targeted engagement: With vulnerable groups, including older adults and people with disabilities.

  • Local events and campaigns: Participation in community days, safety fairs, and seasonal campaigns to raise awareness of fire, water and personal safety.

  • Partnership work: Collaboration with Adult Social Care, housing providers, health services, and safeguarding teams to support holistic safety and wellbeing.

Working together for safer communities

Our education programmes are supported by strong partnerships with local authorities, schools, and safeguarding networks.

Through these collaborations, we aim to:

  • Reduce fire, road traffic collisions and water incidents and injuries

  • Promote responsible citizenship

  • Support vulnerable individuals and families

  • Build trust and visibility within our communities

Whether in a classroom, a community centre, or a resident’s home, our goal is the same: to empower people with the knowledge and tools they need to stay safe and make Northumberland safer

We also have developed resources for the under 5s, check out our new Padlet. We’re helping teach the little ones all about fire safety. Feel free to click the link and use it in your classroom or home. We’ve even got a video from Timone and Pumba on there!
