Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service

Follow our simple steps to ensure the safety of you, your family and friends when camping in tent or staying in a caravan.

Always:

  • Make sure there is a water supply nearby and familiarise yourself with the location of firefighting equipment on site.

  • Identify the nearest telephone in case of an emergency.

  • Ensure everyone knows how to escape from the caravan or tent and where to meet once safely outside.

  • Keep caravans and tents at least six metres apart and away from parked vehicles.

  • Keep a torch within easy reach to help you see in the dark.

Never:

  • Leave cooking unattended.

  • Dry clothes over a stove.

  • Store fuel under your caravan or in direct sunlight.

  • Use a barbecue inside a caravan or tent.

  • Cook inside a tent - they are highly flammable and fires can spread very quickly.

  • Use candles while camping.

  • Smoke inside a caravan or tent.

If you are staying in a caravan:

  • All caravans must be fitted with a working smoke alarm

  • Test smoke alarms weekly and never remove the batteries

  • Fit a carbon monoxide detection if you use gas in the caravan

  • Make sure the caravan is ventilated, and never block air vents, to avoid a build up of poisonous gases Turn off all appliances before you leave the caravan or go to bed

  • Never use a cooker or heater while your caravan is moving

  • Find out the firefighting arrangements on the campsite

  • Children should never be left alone in a caravan

  • Remove litter and rubbish near the caravan to reduce the risk of fire spreading

  • Gas cylinders should be kept outside and should be turned off unless they are designed to run continuously and you should only change the bottle when it is completely empty

  • Never use fuel-burning devices inside the caravan (e.g. disposable barbecues, camping stoves, camping heaters, lanterns, and charcoal grills)

  • Make sure the gas pipe connection is secure.

  • If you suspect a leak, turn off the main cylinder valve

  • Never smoke whilst changing your gas

  • Caravan sites can be spread over a large area, so apps like What3Words or the GPS co-ordinates on your phone can help emergency crews get to you as soon as possible

What3Words

what3words is a global addressing system that divides the entire world into a grid of 3m × 3m squares, giving each square a unique combination of three everyday words. This simple idea makes it easy to communicate precise locations anywhere on Earth, even in places without traditional addresses. The system works by converting GPS coordinates into fixed three‑word identifiers.
